Getting started

1

Install NEXA Server

Download it from nexaapp.tv for Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD or your NAS. Run the installer and open the web dashboard it shows you (normally http://your-pc:4500).

2

Create the owner account

The first account you create is the server owner (admin). Then add a library for each folder of media you own — Movies, TV Shows, Music, Audiobooks — and let the scan finish.

3

Connect the app

Open NEXA on your phone or TV and enter your server's address on the home network, or sign in with a nexaapp.tv account and pick your server from the list.

4

Invite people (optional)

Settings → Friends & Invites creates a one-time invite link. Choose which libraries each friend can see; you can change or revoke access any time.

Frequently asked questions

Does NEXA come with any movies, shows or channels?

No. NEXA is a player and organizer for media you already own — like a personal media server. It has no catalog, no store and no built-in channels. If your library is empty, it's because no media folders have been added to your server yet.

Where do I get media to put on my server?

From sources you own or are licensed to use: home videos, purchased digital downloads, DRM-free music and audiobooks, podcasts, and personal copies of discs you bought where your local law allows. NEXA cannot play DRM-protected purchases from other stores (iTunes movies, Kindle audiobooks, etc.).

The app can't find my server.

Make sure the phone and the server are on the same Wi-Fi network, the server is running (check its dashboard on the computer itself), and your firewall allows port 4500. If you are away from home, sign in with a nexaapp.tv account so the app can reach the server through the relay.

How does remote access work? Is my home network exposed?

Your server keeps an outbound, encrypted connection open to the nexaapp.tv relay. Your apps talk to the relay, and the relay forwards to your server. No ports need to be opened and your home IP address is never shown to viewers or in share links. The relay does not store your media.

Can my friends see everything on my server?

Only what you allow. Each user has a library-access list that the owner controls, and invited users only ever see their own watch history.

What is the Live TV section?

An optional player for a live-TV service you already subscribe to that offers a standard streaming (Xtream/M3U) login. You enter your own provider's address and credentials on your server; NEXA just plays what that provider delivers. NEXA does not include, sell, endorse or provide any channels or providers, and we can't help with problems on a provider's side.

Which platforms are supported?

Apps: iPhone/iPad (iOS 16+), Amazon Fire TV, Android phones and TVs, and the web app at nexaapp.tv/app. Server: Windows 10/11, Linux (x64), macOS, FreeBSD, Synology and other Docker-capable NAS units.

Does NEXA cost anything?

The apps are free to download. Some features may be offered as optional purchases in the future; nothing you already own or have set up will be taken away.

Playback & transcoding

“Direct Play”, “Direct Stream” and “Transcode” — what's the difference?

Direct Play: your device reads the file as-is (fastest, no server load). Direct Stream: the server repackages the file (for example MKV → HLS) without re-encoding video. Transcode: the server re-encodes the video, typically because the device can't decode the codec or the network is too slow. The player shows which one is in use under the title.

Playback is slow to start or stutters.

Transcoding is CPU-heavy. Enable hardware transcoding in the server's Settings → Transcoder if your machine has an NVIDIA, Intel or AMD GPU, and keep its driver updated. Files in MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio direct-play on almost everything and avoid transcoding altogether.

A title says “Video could not be played on this device”.

The server tried direct play, then a stream, then a full re-encode, and none decoded. This is rare — usually a damaged file or an unusual codec. Check that the file plays on the server computer itself, then email us the codec details shown in the file's info panel.

Why did my stream stop with “Stream stopped by admin”?

The server owner stopped your session from the Now Playing dashboard. The same title can't be restarted for one minute afterwards. Ask the owner if this was unexpected.

Subtitles

Subtitle tracks embedded in the file are detected by the scanner and available from the player's subtitle menu. Keeping subtitles inside the container (MP4/MKV) is the most reliable option.

Accounts & deletion

Delete my account on a friend's server

Ask the server owner — they can remove your user from Settings → Users, which also deletes your watch history on that server. You can also simply sign out and delete the app; nothing about you is stored anywhere else.

Delete my nexaapp.tv account

Sign in at nexaapp.tv and choose Delete account, use Delete Account in the app's Settings screen, or email [email protected] from the address on the account. The account and its server registrations are removed within 30 days. This does not affect the server itself or anything stored on it.

Reset a password

Server accounts: the server owner can reset any user's password from Settings → Users. nexaapp.tv accounts: use Forgot password on the sign-in page.

Terms of Use

Effective September 7, 2026

By installing or using NEXA Server, the NEXA apps or nexaapp.tv (together, “NEXA”) you agree to these terms with Romeoz Apps.

1. What NEXA is

NEXA is software that organizes and plays media files stored on hardware that you control. NEXA does not provide, host, index, sell, license or recommend any content, and does not include access to any television channel or streaming service.

2. Your content and your responsibility

You are solely responsible for the media you add to a NEXA Server, for anyone you invite to it, and for any third-party service (such as a live-TV subscription) you connect to it. You represent that you own, or hold a valid license or other legal right to use, every file you add and every service you connect, and that your use complies with the laws of your country. Personal, non-commercial use only: you may not use NEXA to make content available to the public, to charge others for access, or to distribute content you do not have the right to distribute.

3. Prohibited use

You may not use NEXA to infringe copyright or any other right; to access services you are not entitled to; to store or share unlawful material; to interfere with, overload or attempt to gain unauthorized access to nexaapp.tv or anyone else's server; or to remove or bypass any security or attribution notice in the software.

4. Accounts

Keep your credentials confidential; you are responsible for activity under your account. We may suspend or terminate nexaapp.tv accounts that violate these terms or that we reasonably believe are being used unlawfully, and will notify you where we can.

5. Third-party services

Metadata comes from The Movie Database (TMDb) under its terms; NEXA is not endorsed or certified by TMDb. Any live-TV provider, smart-home platform or other service you connect is governed by that provider's own terms and is entirely between you and them.

6. Software license

Romeoz Apps grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use NEXA on devices you own or control, for personal use, subject to these terms. The software is provided “as is” without warranty of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Romeoz Apps is not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential damages, or for any content you or others place on or play through NEXA; our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us for NEXA in the twelve months before the claim (which may be nothing).

7. Indemnity

You will defend and hold Romeoz Apps harmless from any claim arising from the content you add to or play through NEXA or from your breach of these terms.

8. Changes; governing law

We may update these terms by posting the new version here with a new effective date; continued use after that date is acceptance. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If any provision is unenforceable the rest remains in effect.

Romeoz Apps respects the intellectual-property rights of others and requires NEXA users to do the same. Because media is stored on users' own servers and never on our systems, we cannot remove files from a user's computer; however, we will act on valid notices under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512) regarding content made accessible through nexaapp.tv, including suspending relay access and accounts of repeat infringers.

Send notices to our designated agent at [email protected] (subject line “DMCA notice”) including: identification of the copyrighted work; the nexaapp.tv share link or account involved; your contact information; a statement of good-faith belief that the use is not authorized; a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the notice is accurate and you are authorized to act for the owner; and your physical or electronic signature. Counter-notices may be sent to the same address.
